Readers React to Embarcadero's CodeGear Releases

A sampling of letters from the developer community.

When Embarcadero Technologies Inc. launched Delphi 2009 and C++Builder 2009, it marked the first major launch of existing CodeGear development products since Embarcadero purchased CodeGear in May 2008. Here's what Redmond Developer Newsletter readers had to say about it:

Delphi and the Visual Component Library were once the best IDE and framework for developing apps. Right now, the best IDE and framework are Microsoft's Visual Studio and .NET Framework. Delphi was a great influence and the only "real" alternative to the Microsoft IDEs. I think that competition is always a good thing, because it forces you to improve, and it's good to hear that Delphi C++Builder is back. That will put some pressure on Microsoft to improve Visual Studio again.

I'd like to see simplicity in the new package. Delphi versions 1 to 7 had a level of simplicity in use, but then became messy and complex and confusing when they began to follow Visual Studio's model. So, sure -- include wonderful capabilities, but make sure they're simple to learn about and simple to use. I'd also like to see a data viewer built into the debugging capability, so that I can see the data in the various tables that I'm working through.
